Computer problem.......doesn't exist so can't delete! Help!

I seem to have a programme running on my computer but when I try to shut it down a pop-up tells me that it doesn't exist!
I know it's a bit vague but can anyone please offer me some advice?

Sorry....forgot to say it's called Broadband Advisor.....by Virgin Media. Just want to get rid of it.

Have you tried removing it ? Control panel > programs & features in Vista , add or remove programs in XP. Highlight it & then uninstall .
