Scented gas anaesthetic

My 11 yr old son refused general gas anaesthetic ( for very minor surgery on his foot) because of bad rubber smell -so he had injection instead.However , i later discovered that gas is scented specifically for children such as vanilla.So is there any reason scented gas anaesthetic was not given?

Turning off water supply - does it affect central heating

Did "they" have the necessary equipment at the time?

It's all very well to say that there exists masks and/or anaesthetic gas scented with vanilla (or orange, strawberry, bubble gum etc.) but if "they" haven't got the kit then "they" can't use it.

(NB I use "they" because you haven't stated which institution.)

If it was, as you say, very minor surgery, then he was probably better off with a local anaesthetic anyway. General anaesthetics carry quite a high level of risk.

The institution was the main Childrens Hospital - so they should have scented gas at all times
Question is not about availability or cost - but medical reasons (if any ) for not using it - are there any?

The people to ask are the hospital concerned, the smell may well have been from the mask .
