How do sites like Google and TFL work out how long it would take to walk from A to B? What is the approx mph they use for a person walking?

It appears that Google Maps uses 3mph.

I set up various routes which all translated to 3 mph.

Tells me it would take 3 days 15 hours to walk from my house to my mum and dads. Not sure when I'm supposed to sleep through.
