A thermocouple is a device made of two conductors joined together. The conductors can be made of any two dissimilar metals.

If the two junctions are held at different temperatures a current will flow in the circuit. The magnitude and direction of the current is directly proportional to the difference in temperature between the two juctions. This was discovered by T.J. Seebeck in 1851 and is called (unsurprisingly) The Seebeck Effect.
