Non-rechargeable batteries

I know that you are advised not to recharge batteries such as Duracelle alkaline, but what would happen if you did?

Please use caution and keep the area well ventilated. As one site says, they will vent a small amount of hydrogen gas, in all probability...

They are simply not designed to be recharged. By that I mean that the chemical process that goes inside the cell cannot be reversed by applying a reversed current flow at the terminals. You might get a few coulumbs out of it, in the short term. But that's it.
Then again, it is more likely to explode.
