Not knowing the make or model number of your lap-top nor the operating system you're using makes it difficult to give a definitive answer. The vast majority of motherboards do have sound capability built in, albeit quite basic in the low end market. Just transferring software wont in itself produce sound for you.
It could be that the sound has been disabled by the previous owner because they didn't like the startup/shutdown jingle or the warning bells when they did something 'suspect'. To find out, you should enter 'Setup' when booting up and pressing delete (or whatever your BIOS tells you to do, then looking for the legacy sound in the setup 'DOS type' screens. It may have something like AC97 and 'disabled' next to it. Using the arrow keys, highlight the specific line and then press either page up or page down will switch it to 'Enabled'. Save and exit new settings and re-boot.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.
