how do i find out

i have just moved into a house and cant find out who the gas supplier was from the previous tenants for me to change over how do i find this out i have tried the local conucil and various energy suppliers and no luck please help me asap

Have you tried asking the neighbours if they know???
You could also wait until you get your first fuel bill in a few months time. You may find that you don't want to change suppliers!!
The problem with Wak's Idea is that if the previous tenant has left an outstanding bill you'll be billed for that too!

take as much proof of what the reading on the meter was when you moved in as you can, and make sure it's also recorded on the paperwork of whoever you rent the house from!

There are many cases of people not receiving bills for years, so waiting is not a good option. Asking the neighbours is no good either, since, although the gas comes through the same pipes (as the electricity comes through the same wires) you can all be paying different suppliers. Wasn't it easier when there was one gas company and one electricity company to choose from? They may have been inefficient, and we may have been paying more than we needed to, but we didn't have these touts knocking on your door trying to get you to change, and everyone paid the same, so you didn't meet people who had changed supplier and gloated about saving �100 a year. TCL-Mumping seems to know what he/she is talking about. Do that.
Agree with the Corby one (TCL) - act now. Armed with your MPRN "Meter number" and the reading when you moved in - contact the number given. You can then choose whichever supplier you want and won't find yourself with large arrears, or worse still, liability for someone else's bill.

Even if they dispute your claim to be a new customer (unlikely, but it has been known), you can insist that they take a reading of the meter, and the sooner you act, the closer their reading will be to yours(ie. when you moved in).
