A vertical cylinder has a cross sectional area of 0.2m2 and contains 2kg of water initially at 15C. The water is subject to a constant pressure of 7 bar by the wieght of the frictionless piston. The system is perfectly insulated and the piston is raised 1m by a heat input rate of 500W.

Calculate the time taken for the piston to rise by this amount.

Take the density of water at 15C as 1000kg/m3

The average Japanese 10 year old could probably do this in their head in 5 minutes. Meanwhile the wonderful British education system struggles to get 10 year olds to learn their 5 times table.
