Does the dvd have an auxillary channel, like the old VHS recorders had. Providing it has, and you are connected right, (I assume Freeview to dvd to TV) it should work.
Another way to check the above would be to look to see how the cables are connected.
If your Freeview box is running direct to the TV, and the DVD is also running straight to the TV, this is never going to be possible.
The set-up would have to be that the Freeview box runs into the DVD, which in turn feeds into the TV. If you don't have a DVD that enables that to happen, it isn't possible.
Your DVD Recorder should have an integrated Digital Tuner (Freeview) and you will have to access 'Menu' Function and go into 'Set-up' Section and do Automatic Scan in order to tune your recorder into the available Channels. Connect Freeview Box to DVD and connect DVD to TV by means of Scart Leads.
If your DVD recorder doesn't have its own Freeview tuner, and a lot of them don't, to make things simple you need a Freeview box, TV and DVD recorder each with two scart sockets. One scart lead goes from the Freeview box direct to your TV and the other goes to the DVD recorder and another lead goes from the DVD to the TV.

You would then have to set the DVD recorder to record via an AV input rather than select a TV channel. The draw back with this set up is you can only record the output from the Freeview box and not a different channel to the one you may be watching.

If you don't have 2 scart sockets on your equipment then you would need a scart switcher of some sort.
