National Insurance Number

Does any one know how the year is worked out from the first two letters. My number begins WE and was issued in19??  any answers?

i don't know how it works but i used to work with a lad who worked in the social security office and in our office once we tested him to see how good he was there were a range of ages we only gave him our 2 letters of the n i number and he new them off by heart.

I left shool in 1977 and my N.I number starts WL.

Kev_UK - I left school in 77 and mine is also WL. So the principle holds true!

Theoretically, if you go to the home page and search the site for appropriate keywords, it should find something.  However, I tried this and it found everything but.  Perhaps you or someone else will have better luck.

I actually left school in 1975, so WE with the W meaning 1970's and the E being the fifth letter of the alphabet would have been a neat answer, but WL puts paid to that.

They don't appear to have any significance or even to run in sequence. I left school in 1970 and mine is YS. Here's some more info:
