Just been reading about the supermarket trolleys further back by Carol anne and it brought to mind. I never use the self checkouts and have no intention using them just dont like them. I know they are quick .But if you put an item through without scanning it would it catch you out when you got to the out door. Got no intentions of trying it but just wounered how it worked.

The exact reason why I am staying tight lipped. Perhaps I shouldn't have commented initially as it feels like someone is trying to use what I know for that reason. Thanks for the support
lol at you bad minded people!!
The most common scam that was about when these self service machines were brought out was, selecting an expensive item then finding a chepaer item with the exact same net weight, scan the cheaper item and put the expensive one in the bag,
What did the scammer do with the cheaper item? Surely, they didn't just leave it there?
left it in the basket for a member of staff to come along and put back on the shelf
i often use self service at our local tesco, last week i had a load of individual christmas cards, varying on price from 89p through to £3/4 i had put them through and relised that i had scanned one of the cheaper ones twice and not scanned one of the more expensive ones, i asked the lady at the checkout to void the item for me and she said to me "a cards a card, just take it at the cheaper price" now this was the staff member, not a good role model at all!!!

Thank you for replies again very interesting .
A friend of my husband, who works at a store calls it "Scan and Steal" ... but I hope that is in jest.

Actually I quite like them - the Morrison's ones now ask if you are using your own bags as they always seized up before when I tried to put my shopping straight into my re-usable. I used to throw the items onto the packing area and then have to transfer them into my bag, which was a bit of a waste of time, to be honest.
