Calling USA from the UK

My boyfriend has gone to the USA for three months. He's taken his UK phone with him and will buy a USA phone and simcard while he's out there. Can anyone tell me what the deal is with charges? What do I get charged if he calls me/I call him on his UK phone? And what do I get charged if he calls me/I call him on his US phone?? Ive looked on the net but can't find a straight answer!

The simple answer is there isn't a straight answer.
It depends what contract he has on his UK phone and if he hasn't told his provider (e.g. Vodaphone) that he has taken his phone abroad, it won't work.
It's up to him to tell you what charges may be made by calling you and he should get some idea from the US provider of the phone service, just as your provider should tell you what it costs to phone abroad. Just Googling for help will waste a lot of time. Check directly with your phone service provider. Hope that helps.
The good news is that the 'roaming' charges are nowhere near as expensive as they were a year or two ago.

I found buying an International Calling Card (or similar name) to be a good deal.

You buy one of these cards for a few dollars which gives so many many minutes talk time.

Using these cards you dial a local US number THEN the UK number, and it reroutes the call to the UK.

I have found you can talk for ages on these cards for very little money.
