Can someone explain how the betting works - my family all had a bet today but it was all a bit hit and miss because non of us quite understand the language.

If you had £1 each way on a horse you're making two bets. £1 is bet that it will win the race, the other £1 that it will be 'placed'. That means in the first 4.
If you backed a 10-1 winner your £1 to win get you £11. Your £1 place bet get you 1/4 of the odds of a win 2.5/1=£3.50
So, £1 EW on a 10-1 winner gives a return of £14.50
