theres a lot of options to choose from, pick wisely
I had a 3 dongle for 18 months. It was ok although the 3G coverage is a bit patchy. It probably depends on which network gives the best 3G coverage in your area. Then you need to decide if you want to go on a contract or pay as you go. I had 5GB monthly download limit for £7.50 per month on an 18 month contract. I actually found I hardly used it. Another option (depending on what mobile you have) you could look at internet teathering which you may have to pay extra for. But you can then use your mobile as a "dongle" either using bluetooth or a USB connection to your laptop.
The T-Mobile one (also from Tesco) is a nice arrangement whcih suits me well. You can use up credits (on PAYG) by buying a day (£2), a week (£7) or a month (£15). This works for me because I only tend to need it on isolated occasions. Also they don't charge if you go over a set limit (which for normal surfing is unlikely anyway). They have a "fair usage policy" and may restrict your access but you won't get any massive shocks. I reckon it is pretty good for me.
The O2 one seems to give access to WiFi hotspots such as The Cloud or BT Openzone, and I may try that next time.
