I have a small Fender practice amp. Its only 15 watts, buts its ok to practise with at home. If i bought a distortion effects pedal, would it sound better than the overdrive on the amp? How much are such pedals?

a simple distort pedal should be about �30, or much less second hand.  it will sound better than the overdrive, as it will have greater dynamic range.

It also depends on what sort of guitar you have.  If you have a parallel wire humbucker pickups then it will sound really good.  If you have a serial wire pickup then it might not be too much better than the amp overdrive.  Of course you can have both on at the same time where you'll have a lot of fun trying to control feedback!

kebab, its a Fender Strat, there are 3 seperate pickups, and no humbucker. Is it worth geting a new hb pickup?

Strats don't use humbuckers, they use serial pickups.  In other words they a less crunchier sound than humbuckers, a more cleaner sound.  You would benefit getting a good pedal!
