I would say 99% ribbed side on the inside i.e. on the drum ribbed side down.

annie not being rude but, if you cannot figure something as simple as that, then should you really be exposing the machines inners to yourself?

Is it not worth paying 20-30 out to be safe?

And if your Fan-belt needs doing on your car then the same rule applies!

Generally ribbed side in contact with the pulleys. They're designed like this to increase the contact area. But the pulleys are also generally ribbed.
i used to repair them for years. i have never come across one that has ribs on outside in fact iv'e never seen it in any industry. if not sure ask where you bought belt or reply here with make and model i'll reply asap
The belt should fit with the smooth side to the drum (and spring loaded pulley if there is one) The ribbed to the drive pulley on the motor. Just promise the machine is unplugged before you start!
I think it's admirable of annie b to be tackling her own jobs such as this. Don't discourage her, adydb! Apart from anything else, if you can find someone who'll do the job for as little cost as you suggest, then I'll be amazed. Discouragement only breeds daft stereotypes such as 'women can't do maintenance jobs', when in fact they can, and are just seeking a little advice on what's unfamiliar. Incidentally, adydb - can you even operate a washing machine?! If you resent the question, you'll know what I mean about daft stereotypes.... Go, annie!

adydb are you perhaps so dimwitted you don't realise you are infact being incredibly rude.

Get a life you Two!!!!

If you can't take a joke like this then I suggest you get out into the real world a little rather than stay in cyber land.....You made an issue of my answer? Crikes I have a joke as I can take a joke back, call me what you like it's a JOKE ffs!!!

PS What is a washing Machine? (Then I doubt you'll get that one either ;-) )

Aww bless!  Don't flap much for a bloke do you? Must be a real hit with the ladies.

I think my sense of humour is perhaps a little different to yours' but I ain't losing any sleep over it.  Annie, hope you had some success with the machine. ;)

Hope not sweetie........Gay!!!

;-) awaiting a reply to THAT!!!!....

Not gay actually but soooo fookin' bored thought i'd try winding up some more feminists....Now wheres those batteries gone?

But it won't be 4 days the next time.

Naw 6 day's.....Ruined the drum doing it!!!, now thats a little harder, the bit with the hole points outwards.
I guess it does in your case adydb.
Yeah - last refuge of someone backed into a corner and challenged for being rude - 'It was just a JOKE'. As though we were the humourless ones. Well done, Annie.
