When the underground train stops at the station does the driver "decide" which side of the train the doors open or is it done automatically.. What I mean is could the wrong doors be opened not on the platform side....

In the good old days(!), trains used to have a guard as well who controlled the doors from a panel in the last carriage. Nowadays I think it is all done automatically, though the driver can probably override it.
