Can anyone tell me in simple terms (as the Freesat website is driving me crackers) what is the benefit of Freesat in terms of the channels offered? Am I missing something as the channel list seems to be no more than I get with Freeview yet I have to buy a box, a dish and have it installed?? TIA

I've just had a quick look at the Freesat channels, and there are more than I get with Freeview.. whether they're worth watching or not is another matter!
Freesat receives freeview vis dish not aeriel therefore you ought to get better picture , less pixillation etc... that is the only defference
The reception is much better and if you have an HD ready TV there are HD channels that give HD progammes. We used to have problems when the weather was bad sometimes not even being able to get a picture at all. We get none of that now.
you will only receive hd channels if you have either full hd tv , not just ready, or hd box, not just freeview or freesat.
the question isn't about HD
yes...know that but see jimjools post
First, there are TWO Freesats, one from the BBC, one from Sky.

http://www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/

http://www.freesat.co.uk/

They both need a dish rather than an aerial (they can both use a Sky dish).

They probably work best for people who have already got a Sky dish (and maybe cancelled from Sky) but still want to watch TV via their dish for free.

They may also be good for people who live in an area where there is bad reception via an aerial.
Well our TV when we bought it said HD Ready and we are now getting HD programmes. I don't much about it so can only say what I have - The result of us putting a freesat box and the dish in has now given us HD. Mabe you can explain it murrymint??
you can /must have freesatHD box not just freesat
a full HD tv with show HD channels.

if your tv isn't FULL HD, you need an extra box/dish to receive HD.

HD READY just means you can get HD when you add an HD receiver.
You can also get lots of information on equipment available from < http://www.satcure.co.uk/ >. Also, loads of info on their FAQs.
If you want quality pictures, go for Freesat. If you're happy with the programme choice and picture quality, stay with Freeview.
I have a freesat box,I have a sky box,I have a virgin cable box,I have hd ready tv.None will receive hd programmes because you need an hd box top set
Ok, I think I understand now murrymint - Thanks.

I recall the days when Channel 4 was proposed. One TV critic said that there weren't enough decent scriptwriters around to produce enough decent programmes for as many as four TV channels! The quality of programmes could only deteriorate. Looking at what's on offer from the multitude of channels we have available today, I can't help feeling he was right!!

Wow!!! Only put this here a few hours ago and can't believe how much response I have had!! Thanks everyone. Am clear on how this works now - and I think I have decided that much as there is a long list of channels, they probably are no more worth watching than the channels I already have - and Heathfield, I couldn't agree more, TV ain't what it used to be!!!!! Thanks everyone!!
EK, I agree with you :o)
Murray ..
You are very good at confusing people.
Also, your first post in this thread is nonsense : )
Sara ... You treated yourself yet?
I am 81 years old and a bit rusty on the web. I wondered why I could get Aljaseera on my Freeview set, and cannot now, but I can get it on my Freesat set. Is it a matter of Sky or BBC? I will be getting another new Freesat digital box and dish when I move in a few months, but I wondered why Aljaseera was removed from freeview? I do not understand the Murdoch family, so I will never use their services.

It is a wonderful news and documentary programme, I know it repeats, but that is because it has to repeat it's news all around the worlds time schedule.
I hope you can help me,
