This is the format in which the programmes were originally recorded. If shown in 16-9 it would be too wide and distorted. I don't know about your model, but on mine there is a set-up option on screen, one of which allows you to change the picture format. Even if you set it at 16-9 you will probably find it defaults automatically to 4-3 when an older programme comes on.
Are you sure of that the model number is correct? because on the Philips site they don't have that model http://www.support.ph...searchValue=32pw3596+ (that site lets you download the user manual for their different models).
Glad you agree Squarebear. It used to drive me crazy, until once when I was watching an old MorseI tried to change it and it stuck on 16-9. The picture was really weird and I had to change it back. I notice this mainly on ITV3 as I like to watch old editions of Heartbeat, Poirot and Morse, all of which were recorded in 4 -3.
From the link I gave earlier there are 3 models with the number that you have, and of those one includes a downloadable manual http://www.p4c.philip...9536/05&slg=en&scy=GB - on p11 of that is a picture of the remote.
If it is the same remote then there are 4 buttons near the bottom and it's the 3rd one along that you want.
