What is the insurance situation when one is selling a car on which the insurance has expired (MOT & Tax still valid) and the vehicle is kept off road?

If the prospective buyer has comprehensive insurance on his/her own vehicle, does that cover him/her to test drive the car with TP only? What if he/she only has TP, or TPF&T?

Any helpful clues would be appreciated.
Thank you.

The car must have its own insurance to be on the public highway.
A car has to have it's own insurance before anyone else may drive using theirs
The responsibility fo correct insurance lies with the purchaser.

Unless the purchaser is a relative or friend, i would leave it to them to make the necessary arrangements to get cover to take the vehicle away.
andy-hughes, he can't insure it until he's bought it.
I didn't say the buyer could insure the vehicle before purchase, i said it was the purchaser's responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is correctly insured before they drive it away.

My answer was to allay Bigfellah's apparfent worry that he may in some way be responsibile as far as insurance is concerned, which he states has lapsed since he last drove the car, and he has stored it off the road.
However, the question is in regard of a test drive.
Ooops!

Apologies all round - I missed that bit!

(retires blushing furiously ...)
further to what Andy said can I just add that it is a myth that Comprhensive cover automatically covers drivers third party in another car with the owners permission etc.
A car can be insured before it's bought. I've just done it. On the forms it asks if you are the registered keeper. One of the options to tick is 'I will be after purchase'.
Also, although there are plans afoot to change this, at the moment, a vehicle does not have to be insured to be on a public highway; only to be driven on one.
Arti - you're out of date. The legislation was passed in February making it an offence to keep a vehicle with no insurance unless SORN'd. The first letters (precursors to fines) to registered keepers with 'parked up' uninsured cars are expected to be issued next month, however ANPR cameras can still identify uninsured cars used on the highway to initiate a prosecution.
As ABerrant says, uninsured cars must now be kept off the road and SORN'd. Furthermore, you'll find that Insurance companies will soon cease the practice of allowing comprehensively insured drivers to drive cars that they do not own, or hire, under their own insurance.
Okey doke, Abe. I can't be ar5ed looking it up, so I'll take your word for it. I stand corrected. Btw, not the first time I've been told that I'm out of date :(

The vehicle is taxed and has valid MOT. It is only the Insurance that has expired hence keeping off road. Where did you see this information about such vehicles needing a SORN? The DVLA web site only refers to untaxed vehicles?
