Negotiating Renewal Price

I've had the renewal for my car insurance but have seen cheaper prices elsewhere. I would prefer to stay with my current insurers but wouldn't mind trying to get them to knock a few quid off.

I'm rubbish at haggling though. What's the best way to get them to reduce the price?

ring up customer services and say " i've had my renewal from you, but i've seen cheaper deals elsewhere for the same cover - can you make yours any cheaper?"

But my point is, I'm useless. When they undoubtedly say no, I always just say oh ok then nevermind. What's the trick to it? If I say I'm going to leave them (which I dont want to do) they will probably just accept that.
Hi, when my renewal comes through I always go to their site and put my details in and every time it comes up with a cheaper quote. Then I phone them, tell them the on-line price and they have always given that to me, even got free breakdown cover on 2 occasions.
well you'll have to decide if you are going elsewhere if the say no

Hadn't thought of doing that shedman. Will give it a try.
Just phone up to cancel. They will ask you why. You tell them you have got cheaper cover elsewhere. They will then do all they can to keep you. Unless they want rid of course:-(
Ring, ring.......
Hello, is that my insurer?
Look it's like this. I'd dearly love to continue keeping my policy with you but you really are getting too expensive. I've found several quotes around a price of £x for my renewal and I'm ringing because I'm sure that you'd be able to match it. I've heard it reliably said that it costs an insurer 10x more to find a new customer than keep an existing one, so I really am going you a favour by giving you first refusal to continue with my business at the price I mentioned earlier of £x. OK with that?

They shouldn't really want rid. Been with them a while, no claims and never missed a payment.

I will be repeating that word for word Buildersmate. Then cross my fingers that they say, of yes, of course! In fact why not have it for free! :o)
They send out these renewals thinking that you will just accept it, but either try looking on their site or a comparison site making sure that you put in details from the renewal so you get like for like then phone them up and do as buildersmate says. Not once have I ended up paying the amount on the renewal and always got it cheaper even if it has only been 10 or 15 pounds.
