I've had a text out of the blue from an unfamilar number. It reads: "Records passed to us show you're entitled to a refund approximately £2560 in compensation from mis-selling of PPI on your credit card or loan. Reply INFO or Stop." How likely is this to be genuine, or is it just someone making money on texts being sent?

I have had a similar message about an accident that didn't even happen, it's a scam. I would say delete and don't text back.
No, don't answer it. I have had similar texts and some saying I am owed thousands of pounds because of an accident (that I did not have).
No. Definitely not. Whoever it is, you don't know them, and they're trying to make money from you in some way.
agreed
I agree, I got the phone call, definitely a scam.
STOP should work (or complain to OFCOM)

...unless of course you were miss-sold PPI, in which case you can pursue a claim yourself without paying Shyster & Flywheel a fat commission.
Do you suppose for a moment that, even if records of that kind existed, they would (a) show your mobile phone number at all, and (b) not show any more natural way than that of getting in touch with you about the refund?

It's a scam.
Just ignore it, if you think you're owed any money via a PPI refund you can do it yourself without paying a third party about 40% to do it for you.
I expect you answer them, pay a few hundred for them to investigate, and then get told you aren't eligble after all. But I could be wrong. In any case a known to be active mobile number must be a Godsend to the text spammers.
Replying to a message like this just means you will get more and more "spam" text messages in the future.

As soon as you reply you indicate your phone is an "active" number, AND that you are a person who bothers to reply, putting you on their "gullible" list of people who will get MORE text messages.
STOP has worked for me. Haven't had a badgering text for months now.
just go through the legtimate method of getting missold PPI back for free - if you are owed it you would know!

I had something similar offering to fight for compensation for me for a recent accident.
It must have been a very serious accident because I don't remember having it.
Ignore the text. Sometimes if you respond with STOP it shows the phone is active and you will receive even more texts/calls
as above, then call yr CC and loan companies, ask for the relevant forms to claim back any PPI, fill them in, send em back and ALL the monies owed is yours, no 24% to the text company
Mrs O and I must have banged heads together because I can`t recall the accident in the text I`ve just had. Thousands due it seems.
And I am sick to death of the PPI calls for the woman who previously had my phone number. Last guy said he had all my bank details and would I like to confirm by telling them to him. Oh yes of course I would...he got the bosun`s whistle.
It cost my daughter £1 to text stop to them.

No, it's a scam, I had that text yesterday too.
Just DELETE. Don't text STOP or anything else, they don't know you!
You're just confirming the number exists and they'll keep pestering you with other money making scams. DON'T Reply!
