At work we do a 4 on 4 off shift system, thee company have allowed us and also pay for us to go college on a day release electrical course.
One of us has just been told by the insurance company that he needs business insurance because when he goes to college it Is for the company??
The company you work for will have insurance to cover all the employees. As you're college course is sanctioned and paid for by your company you will be classed as working for the company and therefore covered by their employee liability insurance
Ah. You meant business insurance for his car. As he will not be travelling to and from a fixed point of work, but will be travelling in the course of business he will need the extra insurance. Could he not travel by bus to college?
The OP will mean car insurance. This sounds like a grey area to me. If business cover isn't needed for driving to/from work I would argue that driving from home to college and back on one of the days is just like driving to work but at a different location. But if you go into work first then drive to college from work I can see it can be regarded as company business so business cover is needed.
I suggest the first thing to do is to check whether you already have such cover. Mine already included 'commuting' (which in my case would currently be to the Job Centre!) and then ask the insurer what the implications are of going to college. It's better to know now than find a claim is turned down later.
