Contents Insurance

I'm changing insurers and am going through existing policy to check details. I think we've over estimated the value of the contents value by miles but so hard to work out what the rough value is to replace everythingI've a mid terrace with three floors. Regular stuff - three bedrooms and usual contents that most people have.
What amount do you have insured for?

Far better to be over insured than under. You really do need to do it room by room, tiresome as it is.

That’s why I like marks and spencer. You give number of bedrooms and postcode and, with the exception of very high value items, the price they give you covers new for old without giving any further details.

Yes ours is £40k at the moment- just seemed a bit high

Unless you've got any valuable paintings or antiques to replace, I would have thought £20K would cover it.

Our contents insurance is £50,000 with all old masters, fine wines and antiques listed individually.

Smowball, hc4361 is correct, far better to be overinsured, if you are not they scale it back. How much would it cost to replace all your clothes, furniture, carpets etc?. Imagine you had to buy absolutely everything that you own again to refurnish your house! Regretfully there is only one way to get a realistic valuation and that is room by room.

If you added everything up individually, you'd probably be surprised as to how much it all comes to.
I'm sat here now in my sitting room .... a quick glance around:
Rough estimates, to replace item with new:
TV £500
Hi-Fi £1000
CD collection (approx 400 CD's) £3000
Sofa and chair £1500
Carpet £500
TV cabinet, 2 x CD cabinets, DVD cabinet, Hi-Fi cabinet £500
Wall unit £500
Misc electrical items £500
Pictures, ornaments and misc bric a brac £500
Curtains and blinds £500

There's prob over £10k just in my living room .... yet it certainly doesn't feel like it lol :P
