St Mary's Winter Quiz 11 January 2025

Last weekend I travelled to Edinburgh for a university reunion from the South of England, with Storm Babet causing a multitude of problems. I have put a claim in to LNER for the almost 24-hour delay in travel (a full story in itself) but no-one is willing to entertain my claim for my missed hotel booking expenses (For the missed Friday night only). The travel insurance policy that I took out with the train ticket booking refuses to pay, the hotel will not and neither will Barclaycard, that I paid the hotel bill with. The train ticket was bought with my Mastercard Debit card if that is relevant. Any guidance would be appreciated as I do not know who to ask about this situation, given that these entities are all unwilling to offer a solution
I'm wondering what these companies will make of the role of the weather forecasts. Will they point out that STorm Babet was widely predicted, and therefore you made arrangements to travel "at your own risk"?
I remember this happening some years ago, when a huge storm on boxing day in Northern Ireland caused disruption, and people who tried to get anywhere were blocked, injured or suffered damage to their cars. Insurers dragged their feet over the "predictability" of the problems they encountered.
Insurers will try to use anything to wriggle out of paying out.
Selected this but no-one really got everything correct - the telecon with the company's legal people went well and their advice was that the train company (LNER in this case) were liable for costs involved due to them not getting me to my destination, as this is what they were contracted to do. Got various monies back which was very welcome, including the missed one night's hotel cost
