This happened to us a few years back and we were able to claim for a new carpet. Best thing to do is contact the claims section of your insurance company, they will be able to tell you immediately, if you are covered for this. If you are covered for accidental damage, then you should have no problem.
PS 12 months on from having a new carpet fitted courtesy of the insurance company, It happened again!!!! There was no way we could claim again, too embarassed, even though it was accidental. lol

I once worked in insurance claims. Once on the day we received a claim for a new carpet following a burn on a carpet from an iron a claims assessor who was in teh area called round unannounced to see the damage and help with the claim. When he got there he said "hello, I've come to look at the burned carpet". "Oh" she replied "we haven't done it yet"
The insurer may be suspicious when you said your son was using the iron. After all, how many sons do the ironing?
If you are covered and it's considered a fire they may repair the carpet rather than replace it.

My son did the exact same thing when he was ironing, he dropped the iron onto nylon carpet. Our insurance company was fine about it. they gave us a list of their approved carpet shops we could buy the new carpet from. I don't see why the insurance company wouldn't believe you, as it is just the sort of thing a boy would do when trying to ironing.
