No Claims Discount
We had a van with 2 years NCD on it. Sold it and bought a new van and insured it with the same company. It is due for renewal and the renewal notice says 1 year NCD. When i asked if they transferred NCD's to a change in vehicle i was told probably yes, but not sure. She went away to ask and came back and said no they don't transfer, but they would give me a discount equivalent to the NCD. Can they do this? What happens next year when we should have 4 years NCD? I have tried other insurance companies who are dearer but they would give me three years NCD regardless.

Insurance company fully aware of this and we had worked up a 2 year NCD on the old van. We have had the new van 12 months so our NCD should be 3 years but they are only allowing 1. My assumption is that if they admit to the extra 2 years then they would owe me for last year as they obviously did not take the NCD into account. (I didn't check this................)
As has been said, NCD relates to absence of claim, not to a particular vehicle. I recently changed my car & the full NCD was automatically transferred to it from the old one.
It sounds to me like they made a mistake when you insured the new van and are trying to get out of it. They have to have a complaints procedure (& an independent ombudsman or the like). Details should be on your policy. Write a formal complaint & see what happens.
