My 17 year old son passed his test a few months back and I told him I would give him £2000 towards his first car. So we started looking at peugeot 106 1.1 group 3 ins and the quote came back at £2500. Checked out a few more small similar cars and all the quotes are around the same price. Now these cars were ranging from £1000 to £1400 to buy, how can an insurance company justify this.
In my opinion there is no wonder there are so many youngsters driving around with no insurance if this is the case across the board, as it stands now my son cannot have a car because he cannot afford the insurance. Anyone got any advice ? He will be 18 in August will it come down at all then ?
We dont mind paying £1500 insurance on a £1500 car (even though that is ridiculous enough) but £2500+ is just taking the mickey.
Thanks.

Which says Churchill, Privilege, Quinn Direct and Zurich are among those currently offering discounts to drivers who complete PassPlus.

You might also reduce the price if you don't drive at night.
Try using a broker - there used to be some companies that would offer young 1st timers a 6 month contract and then if they were claims free after 6 months they were offered an annual premium with a discount equivalent to i years No CLaims - I havent broked this type of insurance for a while so dont know if t is still available but it is worth a try.
get him an old cheap car for about £500...thats will lower it lot...my ins shot up by £150 when i bought a better car
if i was 18 again i would not buy a car i would get a car on finace and buy they fully comp insurance at least if you crash or make any damage you get your moneys worth back.also do a pass plus tesco did me for 2500 when i was 19 on a 1.3 accent said it was a hot hatch lol ok then any way thing is till he gets a few years under his belt its going to be high mines 800 now at 28 and am driving a 1.8 focus on a v plate so cars worth about 500 any way car ins companys will say theres 1.8 mill non insured drives on the road that who you pay for when your mate or son get hit by while drving down the road.
Try Quinn insurance - they are generally cheapest.

Thanks for all the replies. I would NEVER allow my son to drive without insurance, tax or an MOT.That is why I am looking for insurance quotes before I buy him a little car.
I cant put him on my car insurance as my car is a very high insurance group (hence my screen name on here) and he is too young anyway.
He is still a student at the moment and will be untill July. I think the pass plus and the insurance that doesnt allow him to drive at night is the best way to go.
Thanks again for all your advice. I will post back on here IF I buy him a car and let you know which way we went and how much we paid.
You can't use Quinn at the moment. They have been put into administration by the Irish High Court and the Irish financial regulators have banned them from writing any new business in the UK.

This may change as the Irish system is different to ours. Apparently no company that has been put into administration in Ireland in the last 20 or so years has subsequently been wound up.
Why can't the insurance companies offer some type of indemnity clause, such as if you pay £2000 for a years insurance, and have no claims within that period, they pay you back 40-50%. Come on insurance companies, stop tarring all the young un's with the same brush,Its not rocket science.
perhaps it's because most 17/18 yr old lads pass their tests and then proceed to drive their cars like they are on an F1 racetrack

The insurance quotes are so high for a reason, blame the boy racers
They all can't be budding Jenson Buttons can they, there must be a minority that actually do drive safe.
Yes I agree Otto, but its the unfortunate genuinely careful ones who are having to pay inflated insurance rates BECAUSE of the boy racer idiots
i dont normaly do this but im 17 iv been driving 4 months a had my car written off while parked outside my house (not my fault) but yet my insurance has gone from 1300 to well over 4000 how can you justify that when i wasnt even in the car at the time and i didnt claim either i just scraped the car and im currently looking for another but as i am a student with a part time job at 4.35 an hour i can tafford anything i do every day at college till about 2 then work from 3 till 11 every day and have no time for anything eles and im still only getting about 200 every 2 weeks people that afford car insurance at a young age are the rich people that mummy and daddy pay for then they are normaly the ones who write cars off people like my self need a car and have worked very hard for there cars etc i only had a old 1990 peugeot 205 but i cleaned it up and polished it every weekend without fail i loved it and respected it so why the high costs can you really justify it?
I know this is a very late response to this question but i myself am in a similar situation.

I'm 18 years old and passed my test on September 8th of this year. I have been on my mum's insurance for her car every so often but feel the use is too restricted for the money I’m paying for the insurance.

I have been looking around at Peugeot 106's myself but i still seem to be getting insurance quotes a lot higher than £2500 mine are usually around £4000 but i think this is down to where i live as i have a Liverpool postcode, so some insurers won't even insure people in my area let alone a new driver.

I have found that putting my mum as a second driver lowers the cost by a few hundred pounds, and looking at newer insurance companies that aren't in the "big few."

I stumbled across a web based insurance company that offers many different options and caters especially for young drivers... http://www.youngmarmalade.co.uk/
Yet again though this company won't insure me because of my location.

I find the prices of insurance for young drivers to be preposterous, how are young drivers meant to gain experience of driving if they are denied insurance because they can't afford a large sum of money. I see this type of thing on a day to day basis as well when it comes to jobs asking for experience how are people meant to gain experience if no one gives them a chance.

I guess it’s just a case of shopping around to try and get it cheap.
I'm an 18 year old male and passed my test in june, after a month of searching for cheap insurance prices, I found nothing. An 18 year old male, no matter where they live or what car they have is in the 'high risk' category for insurance companies and will add on at least £2,000 just for that. To insure myself as a main driver on many 1.0L engine cars was returning results of around £3500, no cheaper! I eventually decided the only way I could drive was to insure myself as an additional driver and put a parent as the main driver (which still cost £2000), meaning I could only drive my mum's 1.0L nissan micra when I needed to. After 4 months of being included on an insurance policy, my quotes have dropped by about 25% from original searches. Hope this helps
