18 year old Grandson needs car insurance

Today my 18 year old grandson passed his driving test. He is a student who also works evenings and weekends in a supermarket to fund his driving. The quotes for Car Insurance have been in the region of £2000 or more, is there any way of getting a lower quote?

£2k is cheap! All he can do is get a group 1 car and shop round. There is the named driver route but the Insurers are pretty sensitive to that now. The basic problem is that new drivers, especially youngsters, hit things!

The “named driver” route to which the Geezer refers is known as “fronting”. As he says, insurers are wise to it and, if it is discovered, the insurers will cancel the policy. They will do this retrospectively which could leave your grandson open to a charge of driving uninsured. This carries a minimum of six penalty points. If your grandson is convicted of the offence within two years of passing his test his full licence will be revoked and he will have to take both parts of his test again. With this on his record he will face insurance premiums even higher than those he has been quoted at present.

In short – not worth it!

pass plus can make it smaller, as can adding someone else as a nemed driver onto HIS policy. For an 18 yo male who has just passed, 2k is good

Named Driver isn't necessarilly fronting - but it sounds as if it would be in this case.

Try Quinn direct - they've been pretty cheap for young drivers my son is insured with them. I'd heard that they'd stopped writing new business but their web site seems up still.

There are also deals from other companies that include agreeing not to drive after a certain time at night and they fit a box to check - but that sounds as if it wouldn't meet his needs.

It could be worthwhile to look at http://www.moneysupermarket.com and go to the insurance section. I tried it and it came up with numerous price quotes. You'll need to have a lot of information handy, name, date of birth, details of the car, likely mileage and use, what you expect to have included, breakdown, legal cover etc. It might be as well if your grandson was present if you decide to explore that line of enquiry or perhaps do it himself.
