and I was going to help him with the insurance. He says the least you can get is third party. When I was young it was third party, fire and theft. Can anyone tell me which is correct?

Third party is the minimum.

Strangely, for cars, comprehensive can sometimes be cheaper than third party. I don't know if that is true for mopeds, but it is worth checking.

Thanks a lot for your help. I shall do a comparison with him and decide which is best. Personally I reckon the second option sounds good but the price is enormous in any case, I suppose because he is young. (17)
Yes, it will be partly due to his age, inexperience and possible over enthusiasm! However, it could also be partly due to the postcode it is kept at and the conditions of storage- ie roadside, driveway, garage etc.

Looking to change anything like that may help the premium.
