Hot Weather Leads To An Increase In Burglaries

Many of us look forward to the warm summer months. Things always seem to be better when the sun is shining and the weather is clement. The warm nights full of friends and wine in the garden can be a real tonic for some. However, we should be careful not to invite unwanted company into our homes in the summer.

According to one UK police force warm weather can lead to an increase in the number of home burglaries.

A crime scene assessor with the force has warned that homeowners tendency to leave open windows in the hot sunny weather is a catalyst for criminals, allowing unscrupulous individuals to "sneak-in" and grab valuable items.

He continued that simple precautions can be taken to reduce the number of sneak-in burglaries - and to reduce the chance of it happening to you.

"Never leave windows open if you are not in the room. An open window is an open invitation to a thief," he said. "And never, ever go out and leave windows open, particularly downstairs."

"If you are out in the back garden enjoying the sunshine or a barbecue, make sure all the doors and windows at the front of the house are locked and secured. The last person you want to invite to your barbecue is a thief."

Other tips include not leaving car keys on a hall table or insight of the front door, and putting away garden tools before you go to bed. Have security lights fitted to the outside of your home near doors and windows to deter casual thieves.

Homeowners must also remember to get a good home contents insurance quote. However, bear in mind that if you leave windows and door open your policy may be invalid and you may not be able to claim in the event of the worst happening. It is important to check the small print and make sure what you are covered for and upgrade your policy if required.
