Do you need qualifications to be a masseuse?

Or can you just buy a massage table and start?

I think you probably can, it's like chiropdy anyone can say that they're a chiropodist without having have to pass exams, or buysome spurious diplomas from so called medical collages. Be very careful though, some essential oils can be dangerous especially to the young, old or pregnant, and massaging somebody who has cancer can have disasterous effects. Also, becareful how you word your advertising - you don't want to attract the 'wrong' type of customer - eg one who will ask you if you do 'topless' etc.
The point is - in order to attract repeat business, you do need to know what you are doing. You can't heat up a tin of soup and start calling yourself a chef.

If you have a genuine skill, then fair enough, but anyone who is going to pay you, is going to want some benefit, and that does not happen by applying the sort of masage yoou might give to a loved one with a bit of backache.

I'd be incined to do some research - try ringing round anyone who is advertising and ask about qualifications - although most do post qualifications in their advertising literature. Check out t'internet for any courses etc. before you start - remember, the Trades Description Act is a legal document designed to stop people paying for something they don't get, and however honest and well-intnetioned you may be, the world of business does not run on best wishes. Good luck.
Greetings.
I cannot for the life of me remember the actual Act but, I do know it is a criminal offence to claim to be any type of therapist whatsoever unless you possess an appropriate qualification.
I had a similar problem a few years ago when I was barred from advertising my services as a masseur because I do not hold a recognised qualification.
The Advertising Standards Authority in UK should be able to fill in the relevant bits.
Best of luck!
Cheers.
