Is it illegal in the UK to specify on job ads that only (males or females) will be considered;

eg
'Wanted, office supervisor in steel industry. Salary £150000 - open to female candidates only'

Yes, there are certain exceptions to this law, such as working with female victims of domestic violence, but usually it is illegal
If the post is exempt from the law it should state in the ad

Its called a genuine occupational reason and yes it must be specified in the ad
Advertising for sperm donation from males...............ok I'll get my coat.
The £150K salary looks good.............................
