Supporting Letter with CV

I am applying for a job and just completed the application form, typed a new CV (taken me all day!) and now they want a supporting letter....losing the will to live and need some advice as to what to put in it - thanks :-) x

There's no need to write a rambling letter, as all the information the recipient needs is on your CV and the application form.

Keep it short and just pick out the key points you really want to emphasise, directing the recipient to your c.v. for full details.
In particular, read through the advertisement for the job and pick up on the key points. For example, if the job specification calls for experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, together with supervisory experience, make sure that you mention each of those things.
e.g.
"My previous employment has developed my skills with Microsoft Office programs, in particular with Word and Excel.
While I am a good team-player, I also enjoy taking responsibility and accepting new challenges. My supervisory experience with Bloggs and Co has enabled me to develop my natural skills in this area"

I'm giving my age away, but in the days before word processors it was not uncommon to request that an application form be accompanied by a covering HANDWRITTEN letter (my capitals). This was often followed by the statement that typewritten letters would be disregarded. I can see the reasoning behind it.
