Touch Typing

I am trying to learn to touch type. I have had moderate success so far. However I have come across a couple of stumbling blocks.

I am using two different on line tutors

1 Is the typing instructor

2 Is ratatype

Now, the problem is, the typing instructor doesn't recognise "'" in the place on my keyboard it says it should be where the # is.

And Ratatype doesn't recognise where @ and # are on my pc, I got a message to tell me to change my keyboard to English. But I have checked and it is English.

I have gone to the control panel keyboard and it says it it is English Uk.

I hope you can understand what I am saying. Furthermore, should I learn on the keyboard I already have or should I learn on the keyboard as shown.

The two tutors seem to be in conflict with each other. I would leave ratatype alone and use the typing instructor. Perhaps you can 'work around' the typing instructor's failure to recognise one or two characters.

I forgot to say, I haven't got round to the typing instructor symbles yet, but it would appear they are the same as ratatype.

Just use the one programme, not a mix of the two. Are they current versions? Don't forget keyboard symbol layouts have changed considerably over the years - the letters and numbers on the QWERTY keyboard are the same, but other symbols have been introduced which weren't on earlier keyboards.

Mac and PC keyboards also vary the location of " and @

As I use both, I instinctively know whats where, but as I type this (on iPad) and have to think about it, I couldn't say which was where!

I had "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" and my family found it quite easy to use. I only used it for keeping up speed as I already knew how to touch type but still found it quite good for speed checks. You should be able to pick up cheap copy of it on-line.

Thanks for all replies. I realise now that if it's only symbols, it doesn't really matter about location as they are seldom used.
