It used to work like that unless you lived in the USA now the banks have accepted the American way - 1000 millions are a billion and 1000 billions are a trillion. Scientists and mathmatitions tend to stay away from these ambiguous terms and will use words like '10 to the power of'

not quite as you described it. Short scale (American) is now generally accepted as standard. The old British system (Long scale) is virtually obsolete.
