Verbal and non-verbal tests

Can anyone please explain the difference between a verbal test and a non- verbal test?

Could it be that a verbal test is one where you are asked questions (verbally) and a non-verbal test is one where the questions are written on paper (like an exam) or on computer, possibly even sign language.....?

Thank you, angeldraws. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning are written tests given to assess children at certain times in their education. I have seen these papers (grandchildren!!) and I don't understand the difference between them or, in fact, the reason for them. I just though someone out there could give me the low down!

Verbal tests test your "verbal" ability - e.g. reading

Non-verbal tests test reasoning - the ability to work things out from diagrams etc - e.g. a series of shapes which is the odd one out? What is the missing number in this equence? (You see these a lot in adverts for Mensa)
