What is your views on boarding school, did you are you children attend or would you consider sending children to boarding school. I had family who went to boarding school and they hated it had a long term affect on them as well. I think you can have a good enough education at day school! Do parents do it for the sake of the kids are themselves!

No, they do it for personal convenience to get kids out from under feet, and also so they mix with the right set.
Why bother having kids if you send them away?

it used to be an opportunity to get a better education for the children of Air force parents.

I suppose the parents may have felt that a paid for education at a highly regarded school was a good opportunity.

It probably also depends on the child. I dont that that any of the boarders that were in my year (i was day pupil) had any problems with it.
It was the finest thing we did for our son and it was what he wanted to do. He had the choice of the local school or the one he went to. It broke my heart when he went there at 11. It certainly wasn't to get him from under our feet, far from it. It was because the school catered specifically for a talent he had. I worked hard to pay for him to go there. I don't like our local school - small town and insular.

I would have loved him to have been at home. But he had a lovely time, met people from all walks of life, and became very confident and self sufficient.

It depends on the child and I we did for our child not for ourselves. I wish people would think before they make stupid sweeping statements like Mosaic.

Red, you probably know where my son went. Not to far away from you or from us which a fantastic reputation.
between you and the coast? H?
I was a boarding school for a short while, I enjoyed the routine, it gave me some self-confidence. It was necessity rather than parent convenience at the time.
object to a few of the answers - we turned down a lot of luctrative jobs because the schooling conditions weren't right - my kids were raised in Africa and it was an accepted fact that most kids went to boarding school (and no, most of them weren't scarred for life) 9n the right environment it taught them independence, self awareness and the ability to take life's knocks. Both of them are very successfull in their chosen careers and love their Mum and Dad to pieces. It depends on the parents, the kids and the school. There is no formula.

Children can still have a great education at day school! I wouldn't send my kids or grand kids to boarding school I would prefer to see to their needs at home, it is all class orientated!
What rubbish oscarina...........if you live somewhere surrounded by not very good, or failing state schools, and with a lot of sacrifices can afford a good education for your children, it would be negligent not to do so.

Don't agree that's it a lot of rubbish, have experienced boarding school and seen the heartache! Even if I won the lottery still wouldn't chose boarding school!
I went to boarding school for two years, because my other school closed down. I wasn't very happy there, but I don't really think it did me any harm. I would probably not have sent my children away, if I had had any.
Red, No. South of the County. W.
I went to a boarding school.

I had the time of my life.

I utterly, utterly loved it.
Hi JJ. I don't know why oscarina even bothered with this occasion. She didn't even consider the answers and she obviously knows nothing about boarding schools or families. I wonder if she even considers or asks her children what they would like. My son had a great time and wanted to go and, my goodness, what a huge difference it has made to his life. He has travelled, has friends all over the world and is so self-confident.

As for the heartache, the only heartache was mine. I missed him!! He didn't miss me!!
This 'occasion'. Should have been 'this question'.??? I think I've lost the plot!
I feel as though I should say that I missed my parents, Lofty ...

... but I didn't.

My school was all girls.

It was like having all your pals for a giant sleepover for 7 years.

I wish I could go back and do it all again.
My son went to a mixed boarding school JJ with mixed boarding houses, just separate landings! Actually it worked very well - gave them a quite balanced view about the opposite sex and having to live with them!!
I went to boarding school and rumour had it that if you did well in your first term you could have sex with the music teacher.....

As luck would have it, I did pretty bad...Mr Hobson was an ugly bastad anyway
LOL Elvis. Did boarding school damage you in any way?;o)
