i know its supposed to be all high tech these days, so what exactly do the counter staff do, any sites i could look at would be great thanx

They take bets....and pay out winnings. They probably have a machine that calculates the odds.
Fill up the tea machine
Sweep up cigarette butts from out side.

Pick up screwed up betting slips that have been thrown on the floor in temper.
Judging by ummm's gruff answers she used to work in a bookies......

you are right carrust. must be sarcastic thursday today, then again some people just cant help themselves but i did ask a question but didnt think it was stupid.
I cannot help you about the counter staff, but I used to work in a bookies many many moons ago. I was in the back office, taking the telephone bets and working out the returns. We had ready reckoners as it was before the days of calculators.
I absolutely loved it.
Didn't start until nearly lunch time, work was either totally hectic or not a lot to do (mostly hectic, people want their returns pretty quickly) and the time just flew in.
I expect it will be similar on the counters.
Occasionally if a regular punter had a big win, we got chocs from them.
This was in a very tiny back street bookies.
Give it a go.
No I didn't....I used to be sent to put bets on for customers in the pub. That was before the smoking ban....
