staf meeting oayment for out of hours

my sister works in a small nursey school and is paid by the hour, she is being expected to attend staff meetings outside of normal hours, ie in the evenings and not get paid for them - can employers rightly expect staff to attend meetings and not get paid like this?

I had to go into work yesterday(my normal hours are Monday - Friday).I`m not being paid but getting time off in lieu(TOIL).
Perhaps your sister could ask sabout it.

Is the nursery school run privately or by the local council? The answer to this will give you the answer you need. If local council the satff will have definite contracts that explain how managers can use the additional non-contact time of all staff. If a private nursery, it's down to the owner will have their own contracts for how staff are managed and you need to look at this contract.

Have checked the contract and there is nothing in the contraxct about staff meetings, nor overtime rates, and its a privately run nursery (it taken months just to get a contract, even though they are supposed to be issued within 8 weeks)

I would think that if these are regular meetings, then she would reasonably expected to be paid for them. If she included the staff meetings in her weekly hours and then divided that by the hourly amount she is getting paid, does that take her below the legal minimum wage? If so, then it is worth her getting further advice on this from someone on how to proceed further with her employer.
