My daughter is 16, worked in a shop for 3 months. Signed a permanent contract. Weve just been away for 2 wks(booked before she started there) and when she gets back she works 2 days then is sacked on her 3rd day. When she was took into the office, she wasnt offered a witness as she is entitled to because she is a minor. No notes were taken at all. Nothing was documented. She was told she was sacked because of 7 mistakes she had made on the till before her holidays. Think its very unfair that they used her for 2 days before sacking her like but it gets better. She has NEVER had her own till log in password. Has always had to share with another member of staff. They share the till. Nothing has happened to this other person. If they cant track this to my daughter, how can they sack her for it. She has NEVER been told about these 7 mistakes. How can she improve on something if she knows nothing about it?
Also, why we were away, she got texts off 2 different people saying the manager was going mad cos she had only booked 1 week off. I gave them the dates twice so they knew
Whilst the company doesn't seem to have handled this well, unfortunately as she has been there less than 12 months they can dismiss her for almost any reason (exceptions being things like race discrimination). However they should give appropriate notice or pay in lieu of notice.
Thank you for your advice factor. Think some companies treat kids so bad. Shes a good decent girl and now she feels like people think shes a thief. Ive told her to hold her head up and go get another job. Thank you.x
Thanks for all the advice. The shop was B & M retail. I think theyve acted awfull but dont know if we'll get anywhere with our complaint to HO. Weve quoted her working a 9 hr shift with NO dinner.A pallet getting dropped on her foot but no accident book to be seen. Also, the person whose till code shes had to share is the one who counts the tills at the end of the night. We just want a good reference out of them. Weve given them 14 days to respond so fingers crossed.
