It's really hard to say, all you have to get is the minimum.

The minimum is 1.5 weeks pay for each year you have worked for them up to a max of about £400 per week. Anything over that would be a bonus. A lot of Companies have their own scales for redundancy and this should be in your contract.

The fact that he's drivenfor 40 years isn't relevant. The employer may have its own scheme. These typically pay anything between 1 and 4 weeks' pay per completed years' service, although I expect the figure will be at the lower end of the range and won't be much greater than the statutory payment- less than £10000 I'm sure
