what is a reasonably redundancy pay sum for a 40yr driver,class 1,who has been working for a decent family run firm for 7yrs..been told it will be more than the statutory redundancy

Statutory would be approximately £3500 I estimate.
The fact that he's drivenfor 40 years isn't relevant. The employer may have its own scheme. These typically pay anything between 1 and 4 weeks' pay per completed years' service, although I expect the figure will be at the lower end of the range and won't be much greater than the statutory payment- less than £10000 I'm sure
