can my new employer find out how much i earned in my last job

Hi
I am starting a new job in a few weeks time it has been 20 years since I moved jobs so the question is :
on my P45 that I will be getting from my current employer will it have details of my earnings and tax to date or just my tax code as I would prefer to keep my earnings to myself and the tax man.

I'm curious as to why you wouldn't want an employer to know your previous earnings but I know it's none of my business and is probably not relevant to the question asked.

Can i just ask but whats the deal with not showing your new eployer what you earnt in your last job ? I understand if you dont want to answer as its not relevant.

How much are you now earning is a standard question at interview. When you give an honest answer your (potential) future employer is aware of your income.

I've always found that honesty is the best policy as any lies or attempts to deceive your employer would put you under a suspicious light.

In my experience, when given a P46 instead of a P45 we have implemented the Emergency Tax Code on a month1/week1 basis. HMRC will in due course issue the correct tax code and if it is in the same tax year they will give us the previous pay & tax figures for that year.
