Can I seek new employment whilst on SSP?

I hope someone can assist me.

I work for a high street chain as a sales assistant. In November last year I had a stroke and spent time in hospital and have been sign off by my doctor until Feb. I also have depression which is under control with medication. I am recovering well but have problems with my speech, using my hands and walking a long distance unaided. It would be a challenge to return to my current role as it involves a lot of walking! I could go back to work with a wheelchair or other walking aid but would prefer not to.They have suggested I return part-time when I am well enough and do other duties.

After talking with family, it was felt that I should seek other employment, in an office environment as I have previous work experience in this area.

If I did do this what are the implications?
Do I have to advise my current employer I am seeking new work?
What do I tell any possible employer about my situation?
If I was offered a job, do I simply resign from my current job? (I am on SSP at the moment and am required to give 4 weeks notice)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you were still going to work you wouldn't have to tell your employer that you were seeking work elsewhere. The situation doesn't change when you're 'off sick'.

Since it's the Government which actually gets the bill for your SSP (because your employer reclaims it from HMRC) they would be extremely happy for you to cease to 'be a burden to the taxpayer'!

What do you tell a potential new employer? The truth!
("Following a stroke I am now no longer able to continue in my former employment, as I am unable to walk long distances. However my medical condition does not impair my ability to work within an office environment").

If you get a new job you simply resign from your current position. Given that you're not currently working, and in receipt of SSP, neither the employer nor the Government would be likely to be bothered if you asked for a shorter period of notice to apply (if necessary).

There aren't a lot of jobs out there (I've been trying to find one for over 6 years, so I should know!) but I'll wish you luck anyway ;-)
