I have asked if I would like to care for a teenage boy I know for a few hours 2 or 3 times a month as he has some disabilities. Apart from being honoured to have been asked I am liking the thought of a bit of extra pin money....anyone know the going rate I might get?

Yes redhelen thanks for that!
Is it a private arrangement?
Question Author
No ummm it will go through the authorities as she has an allowance for it
£7.50 an hour if doing it privately and you have no relative qualifications.
^^^ or even *relevant*
if she has an allowance surely social services will be paying then and will use a company they are contracted to. Are you a trained carer?
and have you got a CRB with POCA?
4get, Im not sure quite how it works but you can arrange your own care and you can pay them yourself, I think its through the ILF. (Independent Living Fund) the carers do not need any qualifications.
im qualified and worked with the council and i got £8.03 a hour it just depends how sever his disabilities are and if you need equipment to care for him . hope all goes well as this type of work is very rewarding
I'd go with Ratter ..he knows what's what in this business right now..

Thankyou for all the informative and relevant replies to my post this week.
Ratter15 you have about hit the nail on the head; the lady in question never claimed a bean for her son (who has Down's) and now he is 19 she has applied for funding and, via the ILF she is allowed to make her own choices based upon whom she is comfortable with for her son.
4getmenot I have had my CRB for many years having worked in special needs education for over 10 years. I have a degree and am a full time HLTA but at the end of the day I don't believe any qualifications will mean a pay rise as a carer.
Of course this is understandable and I wouldn't expect more money for the work. I was just curious about my second income!! Thanks again and Tammy you are so right...that's why I have stayed with my job all these years : )
sounds like you will not be providing personal care so probably £7 tops?

are you going to take him out for entertainment or staying home and the mum is going out?
Question Author
Cathfromsaron it would be occasional weekends to take him out bowling, cinema, seaside etc ; this is for his benefit not theirs.
They have an older son who can stay home and look after him in the evenings.
sounds nice!

i used to work in a special needs education setting (plus my niece has CP) and the smiles and delight gives you so much back! x
