You need to have the skills of both a scientific manager and a humanistic manager, and be a leader of people.  You need to inspire people and earn their respect.

The scientific manager knows that the business must survive and hopefully grow, and will do anything it takes to make this happen.  After all, if there is no business, there is no team.

A humanistic manager believes that to achieve those aims, you need to understand what motivates your team and gets them to do what needs to be done.  Some people prefer to be micro-managed, others prefer to be self-driven.  A manager needs to be a leader and adapt to the nature of the people and the tasks to be done.

You might find that the skill of being able to think for yourself is vital to managing a team as well!  People can be unpredictable and you might need to ignore the book and go with what you think is right.
