In the UK we have long term unemployed yet certain factions complain foreigners are coming in and taking all the jobs -how can that be? If foreign workers are coming into the country and getting jobs why can't UK citizens get those jobs? why can't the long term unemployed be made to pick fruit and veg/clean public places/ work in airports and hotels? Is it Laziness? The jobs are there for the taking, there is no excuse for a healthy adult to be long-term unemployed.

I think we look at this the wrong way. I don't think we're lazy, I think we're unmotivated. I get working tax credits because I get paid less than is deemed enough to live on, yet I work for 40 hours a week and I work hard. My boss is stinking rich while you (and I) pay in taxes to cover my living standards shortfall while my boss buys himself a new car, again. This is...

Mojo what a good reply, I'm giving you best answer. We as contractors, are getting less now per hour than we did 10 years ago -who is getting mega-rich? wish I knew cos its not the ones that do the hard work thats for sure!
How is that bitchy? And how is it resurrecting a dead thread? It was only posted on Monday afternoon.

I know lots of labourers and none of them would work for £8 per hour.

£8ph for unskilled labor is more than germans earn

£8 X 7.5 hours = £60 per day labourers work for us from 8am until 4pm half hour off for lunch. No you're not being bitchy at all you're agreeing with me -Thanks!!

tamborine -thankyou -I don't think some people actually know what a labourer does. Totally unskilled work, standing around waiting for work half the time, cash in hand. My son-in-law works for Capita in the office and makes £7 per hour -if he wasn't so weedy he said he would rather go labouring ;-)

£300 before tax is not very much money.

yes trigger -there are so many ways, and tiers of expertise, as a labourer, you can wheel a barrow, mix a load of cement, and carry a large stone from A to B. Thats why it takes years of study and hard work to become a jobbing labourer.
My brother got more than £8 for doing that type of job and that was more than 20 years ago!!

Its not far off the mark, labourers working on one of my schemes in Lincoln are getting £7 an hour.

Octavius -that remark was not aimed at you BTW. Most unskilled workers are happy with minimum wage these days -we can't get workers because they prefer to stay on benefits and get more money. We can't pay more money because our profit margins have been cut by 50% over the last 10 years -vicious circle.
Stop it.
