I'd love to be a primary school teacher

Hi, I'd really love to be a primary school teacher but they want certain GCSE's that I have but not the right grade. Has anybody gone through to become a teacher without having the right requirements. I have a-levels and a degree. Please help.

As far as I know you can go and do a PGCE ( post-graduate certificate in education ) and then do a teaching degree. Or alternatively apply to work in private schools as they don't always require teaching degrees but do require a degree in your chosen subject ( I think this bit may only apply to secondary schools ).  Good Luck with this I think it's a very worthwhile career.

You will need a minimum of GCSE english and maths.  YOu could do this at evening classes while doing your PGCE

To teach in a state school you must have Qualified Teacher Status.  THere are two routes to get this:

If you already have a degree you can do a PGCE to get into teaching.

If you do not already have a degree you can either do any relevant degree and then do a PGCE, or you can do a teaching undergraduate degree.

To do either the PGCE or the undergraduate degree you need a grade C in GCSE english language and GCSE maths.  Sorry, there's no way round it, you will have to get the GCSEs before you apply for the courses.  Of course icklepickle is right in private schools they do not always require QTS, but most do.  At any rate private school jobs are usually highly sought after and they may not look kindly upon a teacher without the required GCSEs unless they are a truly exceptional candidate.

How about being a teaching assistant? You could always do that while studying for your GCSEs.

I did a PGCE and some people on the course were doing English and Maths GCSE at the same time, so chazza is correct. They won't let you qualify until you pass though...
