to be fair - cyber has been asking anyone who might know how to get into cybercrime units of the police, and i guess an understanding of hacking would be needed - know the problem is how do you stop the hackers if you don't understand what their doing? You would start by learning to programme and understanding different computer languages. To be fair hacking is not the same as cracking.  If you are interested in computer security then about 5 Universities in the UK do a degree in forensic computing and that would be a start however some of the best hackers and most respected are self taught so self motivation is very important.

There is no direct training. Hackers tend to know a lot about computers because they are interested. For that you need the right aptitude. You need persistance, experience, high intelligence, curiosity and absolute determination. You need to be able to find out things from manuals or by trial and error, you need an enquiring mind and a Brutal resilience. Hackers are often people with all the above but probably had failed careers because they have no other skills that you might need in the work place. Often bitter as they see cretins promoted over them because they are engaged with management jargon. Sometimes they turn to hacking for revenge, sometimes for mischief often just because they can, they love the buzz.

Fair enough.  I had seen the other questions.  The best advice I guess is to contact the High Tech Crimes unit and ask to meet an officer to find out more about his/her job.  A degree in Comp Sci surely wouldn't hurt!?!

Hacking is a really good thing to study. There is a real shortage of people with the aptitude and knowledge necessary to protect vulnerable networks and programs.

You should start from the ground up. As protection methods get more sophisticated, hacking techniques get more sophisticated, and require a very broad and detailed knowledge of networks, programming, systems, and telecommunications.

It's not my line (despite getting some Uni training in it) but I think it is really fascinating. I think I would get on okish as an amateur hacker, but I know that my home and business networks are much safer now that I know how someone might attack it. You might have Antivirus installed, but when was the last time you checked your floppy drive or keyboard connection before turning on your machine?

I have no doubt that 'reformed' hackers are making our country safer by hacking terrorist networks and defeating their encryption.

I don't advocate illegal hacking at all, and it carries severe punishment, but it's a fact that hacking itself did produce the network experts. Boys will be boys. Sad, but true.

Hackers are divided into two groups "Black hats" and "White hats" white hats are what we'd call security consultants or ethical hackers. An Ethical hacker is one who has permission to break into somebody's network so he doesn't go to prison!

Assuming this is what you get involved in ( strictly speaking it's called penetration testing ) you'd want to look at getting a job with a computer security firm. There are not many companies that are going to employ a freelance - too risky.

Most companies are going to look for a degree if not in computer science then at least in a numerate discipline. They are also going to expect a really good knowlege of computer systems and particular of computer networking. You'd want to learn how to program, preferably in C - don't go for an interview and tell them you're a wizard in visual basic, they'll laugh their socks off. 

You should also learn Linux, not only does it give you a good chance to dig into how computers work you can use it to learn how to set up firewalls and write code.

Most security constancy involves checking systems for commonly known weaknesses and vulnerabilities, you can find out a lot about these from sites such as bugtraq (aka http://www.securityfocus.com )

Do not be tempted to get applications off the net that exploit vulnerabilities, black hats love to put trojans in them and put them out there so they can take over your machine. 

Remember, it's not as glamerous as it sounds but it can be well paid. Just don't screw up your chances by doing something illeagal contrary to public myth security companies don't often employ black hats because their reputation is what keeps them in business.

Hacker is a person who tries to gain access to unauthorized function to a system provided by owner or designer. Basically its illegal to do that but there are professional hackers also that work for government agencies and spy agencies so they cannot be called thief's its a skill of re-configuring or re-programming a system without permission there a legal sites where one can train and develop there hacking skills.
Ethical hackers or white hats are good guys who attack the networks by owners permission looking for vulnerable points and reports back the problems or weak points of system of which a hacker can take advantage of.
Ethical hacking is for personal knowledge and information only not for doing any harm.This is one way of hacking ids and passwords.

For example if i know u very well then probably i would be able to guess what your security question answer maybe and therefore hack your id.

I think there are a lot of benefits in being trained in order to understand the techniques used by ‘black hat’ hackers. There’s no point making fun and brushing off these intruders. They are good at what they do. So why not become an Ethical Hacker. The thing is some of them don’t even call themselves hackers but rather smart people who are able to break through to your computer. In other words, they use your own weakness.
