Psychiatrist

Have a vague, text book idea of what a psychiatrist does - anyone able to fill in the vast gaps in my idea of what one does?

No, it's not like that. Boy #1 has just announced that is what he wants to do when he is a 'grown up' :)

They do a lot of listening and maybe try to help whoever they're listening to see things in a slightly different way.

Diagnosing and treating mental illnesses. Would be a brilliant thing to do.

They're also medically qualified so can prescribe drugs if necessary.

I have been going to see psychiatrists for a while now. All of them, for some reason, have been male. Your son has chosen a high target to aim for - has he said why a psychiatrist?

He will need people skills, some doctors don't seem to like people very much. :-)

To be a Psychiatrist you first need to qualify as a doctor. A Psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating mental illness. Several years experience as a doctor and then more years training are needed to be a psychiatrist. All VERY expensive, it costs around £30,000 just to qualify as a doctor you can easily double that before you get to be a 'trick cyclist'

Hi wolf, I was quite surprised by his choice actually. Seems a bit of a specialised area for a 13 year to be thinking of. We had a vague chat, he likes to 'chat' when he is due to go to bed and I needed to buy research time. He seems to have an idea of the different sorts of people he would work with but we are both going to do loads more research into the field. He is old before his time and relates well to all sorts of people even now. We will see, but doesn't hurt to gen up so he knows what would be in store for him.

My niece decided at about his age that she wanted to be a GP, sher. She did, she's moved into specialist medical fields now, but she followed her teenage dream. Good luck to Boy #1.
